Having the Port State Measures in place will help maintain a healthy fish stock for Fijians and our future generations.

The Ministry of Fisheries says this will drive away any illegal activities carried out in our waters.

Fisheries Officer, Meli Raicebe says its important Fiji’s fish stock is maintained for the livelihood of those living near coastal areas.

“What happens is that these fishes would go elsewhere or they would look for other places where there is not much control over their activity. So this would actually push them out and what that would do is that it actually benefits Fiji and communities because it actually pushes all these illegal activities outside of Fiji or the region. Thus this stock that would actually be in the region would be a healthy one.”

The PSM guarantees control over eliminating the negative environmental, economic and social consequences of illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

The Ministry also adds that our current Fish stock is healthy and it should be kept that way.
