The prosecution have asked the High court to sentence Isoa Rainima to life imprisonment for brutally attacking and raping a 23-year-old-year tertiary student in broad daylight at Holland Street in Suva in 2016.

Rainima was yesterday convicted and found guilty of seven counts of rape, one count of assault with intent to rape, one count of sexual assault, one count of criminal intimidation and one count of robbery.

On 30th December 2016, the victim was walking along Holland Street in broad daylight when she was tackled and pushed down the railings.

She was held by Rainima for one hour and during this time he assaulted her and raped her several times.

The court heard that Rainima also raped her with a stick and a pole.

In sentencing mitigation late yesterday afternoon, the prosecution said the attack was prolonged and extensive violence was used.

The defense however has asked for the lower end of the tariff due to the age of the accused.

High court Judge Justice Salesi Temo while giving his judgement said that the victim was attacked repeatedly and raped.

Justice Temo said the victim was a credible witness and she had correctly identified the accused and convicted him.

Rainima will be sentenced today.
