One of the priority areas of discussion during the Annual General meeting of the Methodist Church this week is how to combat domestic violence in Fijian society.

This was highlighted by the Church’s Acting General Secretary Reverend Jeremaia Waqainabete.

He has revealed that most victims of domestic violence are church members and the need to ensure men and women understand their roles to achieve gender equality following the recent revelation is vital.

“This needs to be re looked at and revisited and we refine our theological understanding to see that we are created to be equal and to respect one another and see the dignity and the beauty of who we are as human beings rather than being dictated by our gender status.”

Meanwhile, the Fiji Women’s Crisis Center Coordinator Shamima Ali says the Centre is ready to work with the church to address this issue.
