Proper information to be disclosed on food items

A lack of proper information on certain food items has been blamed as
one of the reasons that Non Communicable Diseases are rising.

Consumer Council of Fiji Chief Executive Premila Kumar claims only vague information is provided on the packages of junk food and carbonated drinks.

“Our argument from consumer perspective is that disclosure of information is important, in other words if they’re selling, say for example beverages, they must disclose how many tea spoons of s sugar the beverages contains, currently it is in grams, and no one knows what is a gram.”

Assistant Health Minister Veena Bhatnagar says consumers themselves also have a responsibility to choose what’s best for them.
