Prominent lawyer pleads not guilty to drug charges

A prominent Suva lawyer charged with one count of in possession of illicit drugs pleaded not guilty in the Suva Magistrates court today.

Shazran Abdul Lateef voluntarily surrendered himself yesterday afternoon after he failed to appear in the Magistrates court when his case was called.

A bench warrant was issued against him yesterday morning.

Lateef’s lawyer Devenesh Sharma informed the court today that they had noted that the matter will be called on November 2nd.

Lateef also agreed to pay $100 as cost for not appearing in court yesterday.

The prominent Suva lawyer was arrested last month following a drug raid at a hotel in Suva.

He’s alleged to have been in possession of methamphetamine on 7th of August.

The raid was carried out by police officers after a tip off from a member of the public.

The matter has been adjourned to 25th October to finalize agreed facts.
