The poorly maintained outlet drains through private properties is a major factor contributing to flooding after heavy downpours.

This was revealed by The Fiji Roads Authority.

General Manager Central Division, Aram Goes says dumping of rubbish in drains is another concern.

Goes adds private drains are the responsibility of the property owner and when it is not kept clean the storm water overflows onto the roads.

He says this not only damages the road infrastructure, it also affects private businesses and exposes the public to water-borne diseases.

FRA states heavy periods of rain in recent weeks have caused flash flooding killing livestock, damaging houses and roadsides resulting in disruptions to public access and traffic movements.

Goes says as a result taxpayers end up paying more for repairs to damaged roads and crossings.

The FRA is urging Fijians to dispose rubbish properly so that it does not end up in the drains.
