The LGBTQI community commemorated International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia today.

Haus of Khameleon, Chair Sulique Waqa says this is an important day as it was the first time that the LGBTQI Movement was able to secure a permit for a march through Suva City.

Waqa says new mechanisms need to be put in place for the protection of the LGBTQI community.

“Policy protection and constitutional protection for LGBT people cannot itself ensure full realization of the protection of LGBT people from violence, abuse attack and all of that.”

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer members did a PRIDE March today, from the Suva Flea Market to the Sukuna Park followed by a PRIDE rally.

The day aimed at raising awareness of LGBTQI rights and the discrimination that many of its members continue to experience.
