President leads parade to commemorate peacekeepers

A weeklong celebration to commemorate the sacrifice of our Peacekeepers who served in UN mission four decades ago ended with a parade in Suva today.

Peacekeeping veterans, ex-servicemen and families of current UN peacekeepers marched through the capital city.

The parade was led by President Major Gen (ret.) Jioji Konrote, former President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau and Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Iowane Naivalurua.

The President says the weeklong celebrations held around the country has made more Fijians aware of the hard work our peacekeepers do overseas.

The president also commended the sacrifices of our Fijian peacekeepers and also acknowledged the support from their families.

Since 1978, Fiji has sent hundreds of its Defence personnel to various UN peacekeeping missions.

Altogether, Fiji currently maintains eight active missions abroad.
