It’s vital that culture and tradition are being preserved and practiced by their respective groups in society.

This was highlighted by Taukei Trust Fund Board Culture specialist Apolonia Tamata during a museum workshop in Suva yesterday

Tamata says many Fijians are being swayed by western modernization and are losing touch with their true identity.

“We would like to promote our culture and heritage and an understanding of ourselves with our identity. The meanings and the values of the places we originate from and a sense of belonging. It is important as well to maintain what is meaningful and holds value to our identity.”

The Commonwealth Association of Museum workshop is the first of its kind and preserving culture through education has become the most important topic of discussion.

The workshop which ends today also covers topics of climate change issues, museum educational programs for all ages, the planning and design of museums in commonwealth countries.
