There is potential for trade between Fiji and Papua New Guinea and further strengthening relations.

This is key for Fiji’s High Commissioner to PNG Commodore Esala Teleni during his time in office.

Commodore Teleni is keenly aware that Papua New Guinea is in a transition phase – and we need to remain relevant in a changing landscape.

“The challenge for me there is to understand the changes to make sure that we keep abreast with the changes now that’s taking place in Papua New Guinea, even Solomons and Vanuatu. You know there are changes going everywhere and the challenge now for me there is to understand them and to see that our national interest in the MSG area is promoted and protected.”

Teleni told FBC news that his team is ready to explore the PNG market and track trade growth, bilateral ties and people to people links.

According to Commodore Teleni, Fiji is also a new market for PNG in terms of investment.

He adds it takes time to develop or change but thinks the 2 countries have a good relationship which will help address some outstanding issues.
