September 18, 2018 5:05 am

All Fijian Election Office sheds that will be setup as polling stations for the upcoming general election will be disability friendly.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem says in some cases presiding officers can bring out the ballot box and voting screen for those who are not able to go inside the polling venue.

Saneem says they’re expecting polling stations to be sufficient for persons with disabilities.

He says there’s different options on how a person with disabilities can cast his vote when they’re inside the venue.

“Say for example who is on a wheel chair, we have portable voting screen and it can be placed on the lap of the person and the person can still mark the ballot paper. We will give them a stansteel and a pen and they can mark the ballot paper.”

The SOE was speaking at a mock polling exercise that will be suited for a polling venue when there is no building or when the polling venue is an open ground area.

There were demonstrations on voting for persons with disabilities who already have assistance and those that will need to be assisted by presiding officers.
