The Fijian Elections Office is calling on political parties to follow the code of conduct in the Political Parties Act to help guide their provisional candidates.

Elections Supervisor Mohammed Saneem says the code of conduct must strictly be adhered to along with its requirements.

He says there’s concerns on the behaviour of some provisional candidates that’s already been announced.

“There has been some activities and complain being raised around behaviour of some of the provisional candidates. Parties who have advertised them as they’re own candidates may want to look at them as their agents and if they do they might find that there is a code of conduct for political parties in the political parties Act and to which the party has to subscribe to.”

These include the requirement that every political party shall respond to the interests, concerns and needs of Fijians.

Meanwhile, the elections supervisor also highlighted they do not recognize the announcement of provisional candidates by a particular registered political party.

He said official candidates will only be approved by his office when the writ of election is issued and nominations received.
