Police are now working with the Ministry of Fisheries officials to investigate suspected illegal fishing near the Moturiki passage.
This is after Waterpol officers came across equipment believed to be used for illegal fishing.
The officers retrieved more than 100meters of fishing net and also found a transponder.
Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho says they are working closely with fisheries officials on the matter.
“But we continue to look in that area. It was the same area that we (police officers) were diving in that a huge fishing net and transponders were recovered. So we are going through that verification process with the Fisheries Ministry and also the CID at the moment.”
Illegal fishing has been a major concern for Fiji and around 18 fishing vessel owners have received Fixed Penalty Notices while some have been taken to court.
