The Police Force has reached out to religious leaders in a bid to tackle serious crimes.

Acting Commissioner of Police Rusiate Tudravu recently visited heads of the Methodist and Catholic Church, the Fiji Muslim League and the Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji.

He adds that sexual offences and drugs are the two biggest crimes and there is a need for religious institutions to help.

Religious leaders have re-affirmed their commitment to helping the Force in reaching out to their members.

Methodist Church President Reverend Epineri Vakadewavosa says they are ready to assist with crime prevention efforts, inviting Police to their ongoing programs.

Fiji Muslim League President Hafizud Dean Khan says their executives are concerned about reports of drug activities and sexual offences, and that police can link up with their branches around the country.

Shree Sanatan Dharm Pratinidhi Sabha of Fiji National Secretary Vijendra Prakash says most of their members are involved in Crime Prevention Committees and called on police to strengthen these existing groups.

The Head of the Catholic Church in Fiji Archbishop Peter Loy Chong welcomed the move saying it was only right for the two institutions to work together as there is a strong link between law enforcement and churches.

The Acting Commissioner is also expected to meet with other faith-based organizations in the coming weeks.
