Two police officers charged with murder have had their bail applications denied by the Suva Magistrates court this afternoon.

Kelepi Kolinisau and Selema Tikoenaburevere are alleged to have murdered Josua Lalauvaki following an assault outside a nightclub in Suva on September 2nd.

Lalauvaki died at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital last month as a result of injuries allegedly sustained in the assault.

The Defence counsel sought bail on the grounds of the officers’ safety because both were involved in investigations of many of those currently in the Suva Remand Centre.

The counsel also said Kolinisau’s wife is pregnant and about to give birth.

Meanwhile, the prosecutor objected stating the grounds did not hold and the Magistrate agreed, informing the court that murder is a serious allegation and the security of the community would be in question if the two were released.

However, the Magistrate instructed the two were to be kept separated from the other inmates and for remand centre officers to pay special attention to their security.

The prosecutor made an application for the matter to be transferred to the Suva High court as it was an indictable offence and the Magistrate granted approval.

The matter will be called at the Suva High court on the 30th of November.
