July 24, 2018 9:48 pm

There have been several assaults on police in the last few days and while Police are quick to dispel that there is a trend, it has been cause for concern.

In the last 24 hours, three cases have come to light, one of which included the assault of a police officer while on duty at the Delainavesi Police Post.

A drunken assailant armed with two cane knives attacked the officer while she was trying to protect his wife who she hid in the mangrove swamps before jumping on-top a water tank to get away from him.

Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police – Itendra Nair while highlighting another vicioius attack says this behavior is unacceptable.

“Over the weekend in Nakasi where one of our police vehicles have also been damaged and this was in relation to where our police officers attended to a breaking in progress in one of the supermarkets and bottles, empty beer bottles and stones were hurled at the Police vehicle which caused the damage on the bonnet and the front wind screen.”

ACP Nair is appealing to the public to work with them and to be aware that any assault on police officers will not be taken lightly.

“And I think the message that we would want to pass on to the members of the community is that please remember that police exists for the purposes of providing assistance to the members of the community, please be able to assist them but not to harm them because if you do that then safety and security of our community at large is at stake.”

Meanwhile, the assailant in the Police Post matter was detained and arrested and is expected to front court soon.

The Delainavesi Police Post sustained some damage in yesterday’s attack, however ACP Nair assures the residents in the area that the post will remain open and Police will continue their services while repairs are on-going.
