The Papua New Guinean Government is providing $3.8m for the recovery effort, following Cyclone Winston.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill says the disaster relief funding is intended to buy shelter, food and medicine for people affected.

O’Neill says they are hoping this funding will make a difference for many people who have lost their family members, their houses, their possessions and their sources of food.

The Prime Minister says the magnitude of the tropical storm is another example of the extreme weather that the region will have to be prepared to deal with in the future.

O’Neill says the disaster relief funding would be paid directly to the Fijian Government for immediate use.

Meanwhile, the Fiji High Commission and Fijian community in PNG have launched an appeal for donations that will go towards helping people in Fiji whose lives have been affected by Cyclone Winston.
