PM wants prison investigation

September 23, 2012 6:10 am

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama wants to know if there is a rot within the prison system.

Bainmarama says authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into allegations that the breakout was assisted by some within the prison system.

He says if it was, then this is a grave breakdown of prison discipline and the government will leave no stone unturned getting to the bottom of it.

The Prime Minister has praised the collaboration between police and the military leading to the speedy recapture of four of the five escapees from
Naboro Prison.

Bainimarama has told the escapee still at large, Isoa Waqa that he will be found and urges him to turn himself in.

He adds the government will not tolerate any breakdown of law and order and especially with people being terrorised.

Bainimarama says he assures his fellow Fijians that these offenders will be exposed to the full force of the law.

He says anyone who harboured these men or assisted them in any way is also in serious trouble.

Police are also now looking at the possibility of an organized racquet that planned the prison escape and the robberies.
