Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has thanked the Energy and Resources Institute of India for awarding him the 2019 Sustainable Development Leadership Award.

While the Prime Minister was unable to personally receive the award due to the parliament sitting, he thanked the Institute and its director through a video recorded message.

Bainimarama says the award is more than a win for him or for Fiji.

He says it is a win for small island developing states around the world.

He says for a country like ours with a population of less than one million, to be recognized by the Institute based in a nation of 1.3 billion is proof that our voice is being heard.

“It shows that when it comes to impacting the world – it is not the size of the country that matters – but the size of your voice and after Fiji’s COP23 Presidency it’s clear that one’s ignored voice of the climate vulnerable populations is being projected louder than ever.”

Bainimarama thanked the Indian government who stood with Fiji from the beginning as financial backers of the COP23 presidency and also assisted in other areas of development.

The Prime Minister was to receive the award in New Delhi during the World Sustainable Development Summit which is currently underway.
