PM reassures Fiji’s commitment to UNHRC

Prime Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama met the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet in Geneva.

The High Commissioner congratulated Fiji on its inclusion into the UNHRC.

Bainimarama gave his reassurance that as a first Pacific Island Nation Council member, she can count on Fiji’s support towards the work of the Council and its initiatives on climate change, environment, and internally displaced persons.

During the meet, Bainimarama also took the opportunity to share best practices and initiatives undertaken domestically to demonstrate Fiji’s unwavering support towards the protection of Human Rights.

He shared the progress made by Fiji since 2014 in the ratification of UN Convention Against Torture, Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

Bainimarama says Fiji will remain a strong advocate for the work and mechanisms of the Council.

The Prime Minister is in Geneva to attend the 40th Session of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
