June 13, 2019 3:58 pm

The Prime Minister has today stressed that cane farmers and lorry drivers not abiding by the weight restrictions will be taken to task.

While speaking during the official launching of the crushing season at the Lautoka Mill today, Voreqe Bainimarama says the maximum weight for sugarcane trucks is currently 16.5 tonnes.

He has asked farmers and lorry drivers around the country to abide by the law and not fill their trucks above the limit.

The Prime Minister stated that they are coming down hard on the weight restrictions because for many years overweight trucks driving up and down the roads have damaged this critical infrastructure.

Bainimarama has also called on the lorry association in Labasa who have decided to go against the weight restrictions to abide by the LTA regulation.

If any truck is found to have gone over the weight restrictions, they will be fined $1,000 for every tonne by the Land Transport Authority.
