Cane farmers have been advised to be weary of the kind of land they use to plant new cane crops.

Sugar Research Institute of Fiji acting chief executive Prem Naidu says farmers must use rich fertile land.

Naidu says some farmers continue to plant cane using the same ratoon over and over again.

He says these sort of cane crops will never produce good amount of sugar during crushing.

The Institute recently carried out a field day in Drasa, Lautoka to show farmers how land can be made more fertile.

According to Naidu the Institute planted Urad Dhal or black lentils and as soon as the plants germinated – the farms were ploughed to increase land fertility.
