Education Minister intends to include Cancer studies in the Fijian school curriculum’s Family Life Education (FLE).

Rosy Akbar highlighted this while speaking at the Continuing Medical Education Program in “Win against Cancer” hosted in Nadi yesterday.

The Minister says we’re so prescriptive in our curriculum services in Fiji because children are being prepared for exams.

However, Akbar says there’s Family Life currently within the school systems and she intends to use this to ensure awareness on any form of cancer and on all forms of diseases are included.

She says students can be mouth pieces who will take the information and awareness home.

The event which was organized by the MIOT International from India together with the Nadi Cancer Conclave attracted both local and international eminent medical experts to share knowledge on the best possible solutions for cancer treatment.

The Minister reiterated that children would understand the diseases, especially if their parents are affected.

She adds it will also help children be more proactive in identifying forms of cancers and urging medical treatment and family support.

Akbar says children at a very young age must be made to understand what’s happening around them and with the current multitude of diseases being faced, cancers and non-communicable-diseases (NCDs) has created a double burden.
