Pet owners to take responsibility

July 10, 2016 5:08 am

Responsible pet ownership and de-sexing of pets helps reduce the stray animal population.

This was highlighted by Animal Health and Production Veterinary Dr. Leo Borja while speaking at a de-sexing drive in Suva this week.

“The breeding of dogs of cats here will give us plenty of puppies, plenty of kittens so in turn their will be plenty of stray animals so this program will help us to let the dog owners so that the pet owners have their pets desex for in the future it would control the breeding. Responsible pet ownership is the main thing here-we need to teach people how to be responsible pet owners.”

Stray animals have been an age old problem but it’s becoming a growing concern as strays cause many road accidents.

Borja says there is a need for domesticated dogs and cats in urban areas to be licensed.
