People who litter will face full brunt of the law

August 11, 2015 5:06 am

The Department of Environment will embark on two phase programme directed in bearing the full force of the law on those who litter.

Environment Minister Parveen Kumar says the first phase will include a campaign to ask citizens to upload or send to a designated unit within the ministry photographs and video of those caught littering.

This will include those littering from moving or stationery vehicles- including public service vehicles with vehicle registration number plate.

‘’These photographs and videos will be used to prosecute offenders. As an incentive for posting these photographs and videos those citizens who wish to, can apply for and be eligible for a percentage of the fines as cash reward.
The second phase will include the usage of the postings in “Name and Shame campaign” coverage on the local media- including radio, television and newspapers’’.

The Minister says this comes after concerns continue to be raised regarding careless dumping of rubbish on our streets and drains.

The program will begin next week Monday with more information to be published and advertised on the weekend in the media.
