February 16, 2018 5:38 am

Social media, climate change and the influence of westernization are some contributing factors to many young people losing touch of their heritage.

Fiji Museum Director, Sipiriano Nemani says young people today rarely speak their native language.

He says many have been influenced by what they’re exposed to on the internet.

“Of course there’s modernization there are all these challenges just like climate change that can erode culture. The most important thing is that we work together hand in hand in terms of promoting the safe guarding and of course the continuity and transmission of our practices to the young people.”

Nemani stressed its important traditional knowledge and practices are preserved and passed on.

Nemani was speaking at the final day of the Commonwealth Association of Museums workshop in Suva which ended this afternoon.

It was attended by more than forty participants who aim to come up with solutions on how to preserve culture through education.
