Most builders in the rural areas are not aware of the National Building Code.
While presenting during the National Building Code Review workshop, Director Architect Pacific, Misha Huggett claims some people in the rural areas don’t even know that there is a building code to follow while undertaking construction works.
“Rural areas, people are without the information they need to build stuff is an issue but also is the economy is also an issue, they can’t afford to build to code, and it’s the cost problem as well as the code problem in many aspects.”
She adds the code’s review is long overdue and this needs to be undertaken to enable the industry to meet the current standards taking into consideration the current weather situations.
Meanwhile the Construction Industry Council together with licensed builders, contractors, and surveyors yesterday discussed ways to further develop the National Building Code.
