Fijians threatening other citizens who do not agree with their political views has surfaced on social media.

Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission Director Ashwin Raj says such threats are unacceptable and shows the perpetrators as shallow minded.

He says every Fijian has the right to express their political views.

“We need vigilance on the part of the public, law enforcement agencies, we all have a part to play, let’s not condone any act of violence, bring it to the attention of the authority so that we can move swiftly and act on it."

Raj says people are now more expressive, voicing their opinions online.

“You cannot build democracy on fear. The people of this country are far more vigilant, now than ever. They are active, they are asking deep and critical questions, you won’t be able to put them down for too long.”

The Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission says it will work with other relevant agencies to investigate online threats.

Raj says people who are being victimized need to report such acts.
