Pensions not enough for retired civil servants

July 16, 2017 6:03 pm

A large number of retired civil servants in Fiji look for alternative jobs in order to earn a living as their FNPF pensions are not enough to support them.

This was highlighted by the Fiji Teachers Union, General Secretary, Agni Deo Singh.

He says many of these retirees end up depending on others.

“We all know that the FNPF has been drastically reduced and when people retire at fifty-five, the pension is definitely not sufficient to assist them in living a decent life. They either become dependent on other people or they go and look for alternative jobs so definitely they don’t retire at fifty-five, they are retired from the service but they go and look for other means of making living and a large number of them are driving taxis.”

Singh says they hope government will increase the retirement age of civil servants to sixty so we can retain people who have years of experience.
