Iliesa Katonivere who is one of the first responder to evacuate patients from the CWM Hospital says it was chaotic trying to get patients out.

“I was at the my grandfather’s visitation today when we noticed people running to the window and yelling out there’s fire at the maternity side, so we came running this side and then we saw the fire at the laundry.”

When FBC News arrived at the scene, firefighters were still trying to put out the fire.

With a lot of patients being evacuated and not enough space to cater for them, some were on the streets waiting with their families.

At the maternity unit, the foyer was crowded with the Mothers trying to check the safety of their babies.

Over 100 police officers were deployed at the scene to assist in the evacuation of patients.

The National Fire Authority is still trying to ascertain the cause of the fire
