The Ministry for Local Government will appoint five special administrators to oversee the strategic management.
They will also provide directions to municipal councils.
This was highlighted by the Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar while delivering her ministerial statement in parliament today.
Kumar says they have also commenced their search for Chief Executive Officers and Heads of Department who will then form the management team and report to special administrators.
“We must first focus on instilling the necessary accountability for our councils, preventing them from quickly devolving into the culture of corruption that mired our communities for decades.”
She adds since 2009 municipal councils have appointed council members known as special administrators which included mix appointed roles including council chairs, Chief Executives and Heads of Departments.
