A motion put forward by the Opposition that was defeated will be referred to the parliamentary natural resources committee.
Opposition MP Anare Jale tabled a petition for the government to urgently address the plight of the people of Lau and travelling public in providing reliable, safe and affordable shipping services.
23 MP’s voted in favour of the motion, 27 against and one did not vote.
Speaker of the House, Ratu Epeli Nailatikau says despite the defeat, the petition will be reviewed as it meets 40 percent requirement of member’s approval under the Standing Order.
“The motion is therefore defeated but we go by the percentage and therefore, it satisfied the percentage and it will be referred to the appropriate committee.”
Ratu Epeli says this means that 21 members who voted in favour of the motion will be agreed too.
