Ice plants maximize revenue and minimize the cost of travel for farmers to access ice says Fisheries Minister, Semi Koroilavesau.

Koroilavesau says this is the main reason why ice plants have been commissioned and solar freezers have been donated to outer islands.

He was responding to an oral question in parliament on why ice plants and solar freezers are being given to coastal and maritime communities.

“In order to fulfill the needs of communities without a water source and sufficient enough to sustain an ice plant. The ministry has provided solar powered freezers. To date, a total of three solar powered freezers have been distributed in three islands, two in the Eastern Division and one in Central Division.”

The Ministry has so far distributed 26 ice plants and just last week commissioned two fisheries stations in Moala and Cicia in the Lau Group.
