Minister clarifies teachers’ pay issue

Speaking in Parliament, Akbar expressed her gratitude for teachers who she says are the backbone of the Ministry.

The Education Ministry has clarified that there were contract issues with teachers resulting in some of them not getting paid on time.

Minister responsible, Rosy Akbar says come 2020 – they will be better prepared.

“It’s not that the Ministry does not have the money, it’s simply because there are issues with their contracts. Sometimes we receive contracts late and sometimes the contracts are given out late and I stand to apologize for any inconvenience that may be caused to these teachers.”

She adds they’re focused on delivering priorities of the FijiFirst Government to support Fijians meet their educational aspirations.

“Come 2020, my one year’s experience in this ministry we have been able to identify a lot of issues and we are rectifying that. And I can assure them come 2020 we will be better prepared to serve our teachers and schools and I can assure them on that.”

The Minister has also called on all Members of Parliament not to politicize the education of young Fijians.
