AG condemns Rabuka’s letter to the Speaker

September 4, 2019 6:39 am

The Attorney General has stated that he does not agree with any of the contents of the letter written by the Opposition Leader Sitiveni Rabuka.

Rabuka wrote a letter to the speaker questioning AG’s involvement in the Privileges Committee and made allegations that Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum is prejudging the matter at hand and therefore unable to impartially perform his duty as a member of the committee.

Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday made the decision to withdraw from the committee and he says the decision was made in the interest of ensuring that Parliament exercises jurisdiction over its own matters without any blemish or controversy.

However Rabuka despite being subjected to the same issue by making public statements, its understood he was hesitant to step down from the committee, but had to back down after a strong opposition from the Government side.

Sayed-Khaiyum says his withdrawal was for the case to be dealt without any argument of the outcome.

“So this is the kind of hypocritical and double standard position that has been taken by the Opposition but at least from our side we’ve done whatever possible to ensure the privileges committee carries out its work without any impediment but also without any sort of controversy around it”

Sayed-Khaiyum has been replaced by Dr. Mahendra Reddy while Rabuka has been replaced by Mosese Bulitavu who now joins Adi Litia Qionibaravi in the committee.

The matter relates to an alleged personal attack by Tikoduadua against the Prime Minister and also the altercations between Bainimarama and Tikoduadua.

Tikoduadua had on August 9th launched a scathing attack on Bainimarama, saying the PM should not be talking on violence against women and should be the last person talking about violence against women in this house and also should know what is happening in his own house.
