Parliament gets the green light on broadcast project

January 30, 2019 6:15 am

Parliament will begin their televised broadcast of standing committee proceedings from the later half of this year.

Acting Secretary General to Parliament, Viniana Namosimalua says with a dedicated Parliament channel, they want to ensure that the public are able to see and hear for themselves the submissions on proposed legislation.

“Where the committee is when they sit, they’re going to be broadcasted unless the Honourable Speaker says they are not to sit on camera because of some important issues that they need to talk about. This will take away that concerns from members of the public that they are just seeing what’s here in the chamber and not hearing out what the members of the public, the members of the committee rather are actually talking about.”

The ASG clarifies that both the main committee rooms are outfitted to record and broadcast the proceedings.

She adds, the Parliament secretariat will designate in some instances a live broadcast of the committee hearings and delayed coverage for others.

Parliament TV is available on the Walesi platform that’s a free to air service.
