PAFCO not meeting local demand for canned tuna

November 23, 2015 5:53 pm

Pacific Fishing Company is not meeting the local market demand for its canned tuna products.

Ninety five percent of it’s products are exported to Bumble Bee Foods Limited in North America.

The remaining five percent of tuna is canned for local consumption.

PAFCO Chairman Iqbal Janiff says while they get good returns from their canned products, they are unable to fulfil the demand.

A new 3,200 tonne capacity cold store facility currently being built by the company should meet the demand for canned tuna.

“We will be able to can more for the local market. This is the Koro Sea tuna, Ovalau Blue, Old Captial, Sun Bell. All these are our brands. We will be able to put more of those on the shelves.”

Janiff says the new facility will also enable PAFCO to hold sufficient fish to cover the off season months when the catch is low.
