Pacific Ocean an eye-sore: Bainimarama

September 2, 2015 5:22 am

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says the Pacific itself should be ashamed of the state of our oceans.

Speaking at the Pacific Island Development Forum in Suva today, Bainimarama highlighted that our ocean has become an eye-sore.

He says we must exploit resources responsibly and ensure the sustainability of the environment.

Bainimarama adds that we as a region are failing in that obligation.

“The great Pacific Ocean is our home and lifeblood and has become a rubbish dump, a source of shame. It has become choked with plastic bags, bottles and while we came blame those nations of the Pacific, we also really need to acknowledge our own role in the trashing of our neighbourhood and accept our own responsibility to turn the situation around."

The Prime Minister says not enough Pacific Islanders are taking personal responsibility, and it’s no use to blame outsiders without accepting our own actions.
