Minister for Lands Faiyaz Koya has revealed that a new regional council, the Pacific GIS and Remote Sensing will be set up to represent the sub-region after years of planning.
Opening the Pacific Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) annual conference, Koya noted this area of expertise had grown over the years.
He says given the region’s challenges of environment and geography, this partnership enables the ability to orient landscapes from aerial vantage points, using ground-breaking technologies and valuable tools.
Koya says Fiji’s COP23 chair commitments with the multi-sectoral impacts of climate, GIS and Remote Sensing tools can only aid efforts to mitigate, adapt and strengthen resilience against climate change.
The weeklong conference is the largest in the Pacific and brings together regional and international specialists, practitioners and scientists.
