The Bottega Fijian Fashion Festival allowed both local and international designers to strut their garments on the catwalk last night, culminating a week of festivities to mark its inaugural show.

For Fijian born, China based designer Jadeine Whiteside the Fijian fashion scene has grown from strength to strength.

She says there is a uniqueness about Fiji’s scene that needs to be marketed to the wider international market.

“Our designs and all the designers here have a special aesthetic which is not seen anywhere else and I think it would thrive overseas and internationally. Also I think all designers here because we are such a small country, we should support each other.”

Fashion Council of Fiji Chair Faraz Ali says the platform has been set to improve the business success of fashion designers.

“I would actually like to see more of the same but the future so far what we’ve seen is incredible, the designers brought something completely unexpected for the runway. It was completely global.”

In addition to the main event, the Festival also promoted creative arts from local artists that included niche boutique jewellery Fonu, Little Village Girl crafts and community made goods from Rise Beyond the Reef to name a few.
