Overloaded logging trucks a concern

November 29, 2015 12:12 am

Concerns have been raised regarding the overloading of pine and logging trucks in the North that may hinder the durability of the new sealed road along the Nabouwalu-Dreketi highway.

China Railway First Group manager Peijun Lei says they’ve seen logging trucks carrying around 30 tonnes on the highway.

FRA Projects Manager Ian Hunter says this is a serious issue around the country.

Hunter says they met with the Land Transport Authority earlier to discuss the issue.

FRA and LTA have met to decide where the bridges will be put in and this road was included in that. So the LTA can enforce the weight limits but at the moment they can’t effectively do it. They don’t have a proper equipment to do it but that will go on this road sometime soon.”

FBC News also witnessed logging trucks parked along the Nabouwalu highway, blocking vehicles travelling on the same lanes.

Hunter says this can cause serious accidents.

He adds they spoke with relevant logging companies, but no improvements have been seen.

The new sealed roads have a life durability of twenty-five years before any maintenance work will be needed.
