Over 4000 students still in tents

July 6, 2016 1:19 am

Education Minister Doctor Mahendra Reddy has clarified that there are only 4484 students currently studying in tents post Cyclone Winston.

The Minister made this clarification during his budget address in parliament yesterday, saying this is only 2.1% of the over 211, 000 students we have in our schools.

He says opposition member Salote Radrodro had circulated incorrect information in the last parliament sitting that more than 85, 000 students were studying in tents.

“This is far from truth. Let alone 85, 000 – not even 8, 500 students are studying in tents. This is the kind of damage the members on the other side are doing in terms of circulating in-correct data. This is the level of inaccurate information that we listen to in this parliament and they want to run the government.”

Over $142m has been allocated for the rehabilitation works of the 495 schools affected by Cyclone Winston.
