An initiative to assist and guide 100 cooperatives around Fiji to be fully compliant with the Cooperatives Act was recently launched in Suva this week.

The Target 100 initiative in the Central/Eastern division was launched by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism permanent secretary Shaheen Ali.

Ali says cooperatives represent a strong, vibrant and viable economic alternative to people who are not able to earn a livelihood individually.

He stated that the Ministry through the Department of Cooperatives Business will work with 100 selected cooperatives in the divisions to ensure that their by-laws are in line with the requirements set out in the Cooperatives Act and their accounting procedures are correct and that the accounts are audited among other things.

Ali highlighted that the Government will continue to provide the necessary support that is required by the cooperatives.
