Obesity is a major cause of Kidney failure: Maruthachalam

Fijians need to reduce obesity because it’s a major cause of Kidney failure around the country.

MIOT Pacific Hospital Bariatric Consultant Dr Karthik Maruthachalam says World Kidney Day this year day is focusing on obesity and its relationship with kidneys.

“Today being World Kidney Day and the main emphasis on Kidney Day is about Obesity. Now obesity causes a lot of problem including diabetes, high blood pressure and it also contribute to kidney failure because diabetes and high blood pressure can lead to kidney failure.”

Dr Maruthachalam is calling on all Fijians to watch their lifestyle to help reduce premature deaths.

World Kidney Day was first celebrated in 2006.
