A surgical team from New Zealand will be visiting Fiji this week to conduct heart surgeries on twenty babies and young children in the country.
NZ media reports that Cardiac surgeon, Dr Kirsten Finucane from Auckland’s Starship hospital will head the team of thirty nurses and doctors who will operate alongside local staff to improve the lives of these children.
Dr. Finucane says their patients will include children born with heart defects which can be surgically repaired and completely cured.
She says it’s important to triage the children who would receive the most benefit from the surgery and follow ups from previous years’ work will also be part of the programme.
The medical mission will be supported by Friends of Fiji, the Heart Foundation and the Hearts for Kids charities.
