New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says they are waiting on information from the Fijian government on what immediate assistance is needed.

Speaking to NZ-based Radio Tarana McCully says through its High Commission in Fiji they have already given fifty thousand dollars for initial and urgent requirement.

And an additional one hundred and seventy-thousand dollars worth of pre-positioned humanitarian supplies have also been made available by the NZ government.

New Zealand has also given its Defence Force Orion to conduct aerial assessment for damages.

“We want to make sure we do what is going to be most effective for Fiji. Fiji is a significant country with significant capacity of its own so we want to make sure that we are acting on the advice and under the request of the Fijian government – they of course need time conceal the information that is being supplied and make their own assessments.”

The Australian government is providing an initial five million dollar package of assistance for immediate response to the devastation caused by Tropical Cyclone Winston.
