The New Zealand Government has announced in the last hour, that it is providing an initial funding of over $1.1 million for Tonga, which was ravaged by Cyclone Gita last night.
New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister, Winston Peters, has told media that this will be allocated to providing aid to Tonga in the form of emergency shelter, water and sanitation.
Peters says given the force TC Gita, all signs point to a lengthy clean-up effort and their thoughts are with the Government and people of Tonga as the Islanders come to terms with the scale of this disaster.
As TC Gita heads away from Tonga and towards Fiji, the trail of destruction left behind in Tonga, has become clearer this morning.
Most buildings have been damaged with trees and crops destroyed.
Tonga’s Parliament House has been completely destroyed by Cyclone Gita.
