February 22, 2016 5:43 am

The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji in Labasa has been tasked with looking for an alternative jetty to cater large ships coming into Vanua Levu.

Commissioner Northern JovesaVocea says the Nabouwalu and Savusavu jetties are now un-operational.

The Nabouwalu jetty was almost totally damaged by TC Winston, throwing concrete beams onto the jetty.

A large portion of the concrete has also been washed away.

Vocea says the Malau Jetty in Bua is an alternative jetty that can be used for the time being.

Division Planning Officer Alipate Bolalevu and MSAF officers have been directed to survey the Malau Jetty and get it prepared to be used.

Nabouwalu is the main economic port for Vanua Levu, mainly serviced by Patterson Shipping Services.

All shipping services to the Northern Division are suspended at the moment.
