The Non-Government Organization, Save the Children Fiji has identified that a number of children aren’t attending school because their parents or guardians are unable to support them.

Save The Children Fiji Chief Executive, Iris Low McKenzie says this education neglect is a concern.

She adds they’ve received hundreds of applications for education assistance for needy children.

“We have provided over 700, processed over 700 applications for children that need support and a lot of these, the background of these families are usually single parents, children who have been left with their grandparents or other family members to look after them because either the parents are unable to support them because they re-marry.”

McKenzie says there is a need to raise awareness in the community so that parents and guardians are aware that they can be charged if they continue to neglect their children’s educational needs.
