January 14, 2018 5:32 pm

Education Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum has clarified that no teacher will receive a pay decrease.

Sayed-Khaiyum says teachers will be able to receive pay rises depending on their assessments.

“All school teachers who are reengaged will be done so at a higher pay rate then they would have receive prior to the job evaluation exercise and equally important they along with new graduates will have greater opportunity for higher pay based on their performance and that assessment will of course be carried out within the first year. So apart from the fact that you have received a new pay rise you will also be able to receive further pay rises upon assessment within the first year.”

Sayed-Khaiyum says new contracts that are being issued by the Ministry are totally depended on the results of the teacher’s evaluation and that pay will be supplemented by additional performance based payments later in the year.

“Once the reforms are fully instituted the Fiji will have a merit based compensation that rewards our educators for both their work and their results, resulting in a fairer system that not only better serves our teachers but the students who are essentially our clients who work so hard to impress upon every day.”

The new school year begins today.
